ONLINE TITLE IX TRAINING
Preventing Sexual Misconduct
The federal law entitled Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 forbids sex discrimination in all academic, athletic, extracurricular programs and other activities at any educational institution receiving federal funds. The law protects all students — male or female — from sexual violence and gender-based harassment by any school employees, faculty, coaches, security and resident advisors, non-employee third parties, and other students.
Though Title IX has been the law for years, reports of non-compliance exist. In response, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) recently led a crackdown on Title IX compliance. The result was settlements in several campus sexual-harassment cases and extensive changes to the Title IX policies and procedures of colleges involved.
In addition, the OCR issued a "Dear Colleague" letter to remind schools of their responsibilities in handling sexual-harassment claims — and particularly allegations of sexual violence — under Title IX. Among those responsibilities is that schools adopt and publish Title IX sexual-harassment grievance procedures, designate Title IX coordinators to investigate complaints, and train all personnel on Title IX.
