How To Prevent Workplace Violence

You need only turn on the news to know that workplace violence is real and costly both in its toll on employees and at a company’s bottom line. Every workday, 16,400 threats are made, and 723 workers are attacked. One of four full-time workers report they have been harassed, threatened or attacked on the job. In addition to being the second leading cause of job-related deaths for all workers (behind only motor-vehicle deaths) and the leading cause for women, workplace violence costs American businesses an estimated $36 billion annually. Numbers like these have led the Centers for Disease Control to call workplace violence an "epidemic."

While all workplace violence cannot be avoided, there are clues to potential violence that employees, supervisors and managers can learn to spot. As such, with proper training, employees can help prevent violent acts.
