Cintas Restroom Study Unveils Perceptions of "Clean"
-Survey finds the top measure of restroom’s cleanliness is a well-stocked toilet paper dispenser-
CHICAGO, May 19, 2008 — In one of the first studies of its kind, Cintas today released the results of an independent study designed to learn how people judge restroom cleanliness. Through an independent research firm, Cintas surveyed 1,500 restroom users, owners and cleaning professionals to assess each group’s perception of a clean restroom. The research reveals surprising insight into how people actually define "clean".
"Business owners have known for many years that customers expect clean restrooms," said Brian Garry, director-segment marketing, Cintas. "What they didn’t know is what people actually think about when judging a restroom’s cleanliness. Our research is one of the most comprehensive studies of its kind, and we’re confident the results will surprise many."
The survey asked participants to rate various aspects of a restroom’s cleanliness to help determine what people consider when judging a restroom. Surprisingly, many of the top considerations have nothing to do with cleaning, but rather stocking. For example, more than 84 percent of respondents equate empty toilet paper dispensers with restroom dissatisfaction and more than 76 percent of respondents are dissatisfied if the soap dispensers are empty.
"By implementing a complete restroom program, operators can improve customer loyalty," Garry added. "We will use this research to help restaurants better understand their customers’ expectations and provide solutions to increase customer loyalty and ultimately improve their top and bottom line."
From stocking to cleaning, the study identifies the top 10 measures of a restroom’s cleanliness. It also provides valuable insight into the opinions of owners and cleaning professionals.
Based on this research, Cintas developed the Cintas Standard of Clean, a guideline to restroom cleanliness to meet customer expectations.
