Cintas Protects the Environment and Combats Identity Theft with Earth Day Shredding Events
More than 10,506 Trees Saved by Cintas Earth Day Shredding Events
CINCINNATI, May 10, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, Cintas Corporation today announced it exceeded its goal of shredding 400 tons of paper in April by +55% percent, shredding a total of 618 tons of material through sponsored community shred events. Through these Cintas-powered events, the total amount of recycled material saved 10,506 trees, 1,854 cubic yards of landfill space, 2,427,000 kilowatts of energy, 1,236 barrels of oil and 4,326,000 gallons of water.
"This achievement speaks to our dedicated partners and the local communities who participated in our shred events," said Pamela Coleman, Director of Supplier Diversity & Corporate Sustainability, Cintas. "While shredding documents with personal information is important to protecting your identity, it's also a great way to protect the earth's natural resources. The response to our Earth Day shred events has far exceeded our expectations."
Cintas truly values the corporate and community partners that made it possible to execute the 183-events held nationwide. Local businesses and community members were encouraged to bring in documents containing personal information such as Social Security or financial information. Documents were then destroyed in a secure Cintas truck by a NAID-certified employee. After the events, shredded materials were then taken to a mill where they were recycled into secondary paper products, such as paper towels. Recycling paper saves water, reduces green house gas emissions and uses approximately 25 percent less energy than manufacturing paper from trees.
Cintas provides cost-effective document shredding, storage and imaging programs. Its services are designed to provide businesses with data privacy and security, compliance with regulatory requirements and greater control and access to information. By partnering with companies that share the same goals in protecting the earth and their communities, Cintas is able to offer its secure document shredding services to community members nationwide.
