Cintas Awards Lifesaving ReviveR AEDs to Office of Harbor Master for Port of Portland, ME
Portland's Harbor Patrol Among Country's Best Prepared to Respond to Cardiac Emergencies
CINCINNATI, OH, November 1 , 2004 – The Office of the Harbor Master for the Port of Portland, ME was awarded lifesaving AED (Automated External Defibrillator) technology as part of the Cintas Reviver Provider AED Police Grant Program. Portland’s Marine Patrol was the third department selected to receive the grant from a pool of over 1,500 applications nationwide.
Portland’s Marine Patrol protects a very large and highly populated area on and around Casco Bay – which can lengthen medical response times in the event of a cardiac emergency. Having AEDs readily available will help save lives when seconds count.
Port of Portland Harbor Master Eric Pearce accepted the lifesaving gift at a special ceremony held October 5 th at the Department of Transportation & Waterfront. Jon Kachmar, Chairman of Portland’s Board of Harbor Commissioners, spoke to an audience of 15 at the ceremony about the importance of having AED technology readily available. “I’d like to thank Cintas, but let them know that the real ‘Thank you’ will come from a family member or loved one whose life is saved by one of their AEDs,” he said.
"Every year more than 250,000 people die from sudden cardiac arrest," says Bob Mitchell, Vice President of the Cintas First Aid and Safety Division. "The program helps Cintas and civic groups support law enforcement in their efforts to rapidly respond to cardiac emergencies.”
AEDs are sophisticated computer driven medical devices that deliver an electric shock through the chest wall to the heart. The processors in the device are programmed to judge whether defibrillation is needed and prompt the aid-giver when to administer a lifesaving shock.
