AED recalls are rare, but when they happen, a quick and organized response is critical to help ensure safety and compliance.

AED recalls are rare, but when they happen, a quick and organized response is critical to help ensure safety and compliance. As a safety leader, here’s what you need to know to help protect your people and stay ready.

1. Identify Affected AEDs

  • Locate the make, model, and serial number—usually on the back of your AED.
  • Visit the manufacturer’s recall website or the FDA’s recall database to see if your device is listed.
  • Cintas customers can contact their AED Specialist for help verifying serial numbers.

2. Follow the Manufacturer’s Instructions

  • Read the official recall notice for guidance—this may include registering your AED, arranging for replacement, or following temporary procedures.
  • Save a copy of the recall notice and keep it visible near affected units.

3. Communicate with Your Team

  • Notify staff and key stakeholders so everyone knows the status of the AEDs onsite.
  • If a unit is temporarily out of service, post clear signage.

4. Maintain Readiness

  • If you have a backup AED, deploy it until the affected device is replaced or cleared.
  • No backup? Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for interim use.

5. Document Every Step

  • Record serial numbers, actions taken, and communication with the manufacturer or distributor.
  • Keep a timeline of events for compliance and peace of mind.

6. Reach Out for Support

  • Contact your AED provider or safety partner for assistance with audits, temporary coverage, or tracking recall actions.
  • Cintas AED Specialists are available to guide you through every step.
  • Download a checklist that you and your team can use to respond to an AED recall
